About Us

Welcome to Silver Ribbon (Singapore)!

According to World Health Organization, there is no health without mental health. In fact, the 2nd Singapore Mental Health Study led by Institute of Mental Health Study reported that 1 in 7 Singaporeans has a mental health condition in their lifetime.

Studies reported that there is a high prevalence of mental disorders during and after the pandemic. Not many people could recognise the warning signs of mental disorders and know where to seek help. And, most of them are hesitant to speak up on their struggles and seek help to due to stigma and other concerns. As a result, the health, studies, work and relationship of persons with mental disorders are being affected.

How we came about

1993
Ms Jean Singleton Liechty, J.D. founded Silver Ribbon Coalition.

2005
Ms Sally Choo, Ms Helen Lee and Ms Porsche Poh co-founded Silver Ribbon (Singapore). With Jean’s kind consent, Silver Ribbon (Singapore) registered with Registry of Singapore on 21 Dec 2005 (ROS No 2210/2005).

2006
The Former President of Singapore, S R Nathan, launched Silver Ribbon (Singapore) on 4 Feb 2006.

Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness: it is vital to individuals, families and societies.

It is described by the World Health Organisation as:
“… a state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

In this positive sense, mental health is the foundation for the well-being and effective functioning of Individuals and communities.

The latest mental health study led by Institute of Mental Health reported on 11 Dec 2018 reported that

  • one in seven people in Singapore have experienced a mental disorder such as bipolar disorder or alcohol abuse in their lifetime, an increase from roughly one in eight several years ago;
  • Depression was the most common mental disorder, with one in 16 people in Singapore having the condition at some point in their lives;
  • One in 24 people experienced alcohol abuse; and
  • One in 28 people suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder.

Stigma that surrounds mental illness often prevents people from seeking treatment and the consequences of untreated mental illness can be shattering, leading to unnecessary disability, homelessness, unemployment, incarceration and even suicide. Silver Ribbon (Singapore) believes that the earlier an illness is detected and treated, the better the treatment outcome.

Exactly what is stigma? Stigma means a mark or sign of shame, disgrace of disapproval, of being shunned or rejected by others. It emerges when people feel uneasy or embarrassed to talk about behaviour they perceive as different.

Discrimination and misconceptions remain among the most significant barriers to people with mental illness being able to actively participate in the community and gain access to the services they need. Also, it is not only people with mental illness who experience discriminations and stigma. Rejection of people with mental illness inevitably spills over to the caregivers and family members.

Therefore, since its inception, Silver Ribbon (Singapore) organises mental health events regularly and commemorates World Mental Health Day annually, collaborating with local & overseas mental health organizations, consumers, caregivers, corporates, government agencies, grassroots organizations, religious groups, school institutions, social service agencies and media to reach out to the community of all age groups through innovative means.

Our Story

Founded with a passion for exploration and a commitment to combat mental health stigma and encourage early help, Silver Ribbon (Singapore) has been a beacon for persons with mental disorders, caregivers, employers, schools, religious groups and many agencies since 2006. What began as a small social service agency fueled by love for mental health advocacy & promotion has evolved into a dynamic agency that curates mental health programmes and services tailored to your concerns and needs.

Our Philosophy

At Silver Ribbon (Singapore), we believe that mental health is a journey, not a destination. Our philosophy revolves around:

Awareness

As mental health is important and mental disorders are real, we see the need to work closely with our stakeholders to raise awareness of mental health so that they will understand its importance and customise our mental health programmes & services according to their concerns and needs.

Accessibility

We are providing different modes of delivery for our complimentary emotional support such as face-to-face sessions, whatsapp calls & video calls, phone counselling, etc, and responding to their requests to fix appointments within 7 working days as we understand that some people lose faith in the health system due to long waiting time.

Affordability

We are providing complimentary emotional support and do not impose a fee on this service as we wish to encourage early help and do not want them to delay their intervention due to financial difficulties.

Accountability

We work closely with our Board, adhere strictly to Code of Governance, and take immediate action to respond to feedback and address challenging issues.

Our Commitment to Quality

We ensure that staff recruited have the passion and relevant qualification to serve the community and provide necessary training during their probation. In addition, we will take the necessary action when they are not adhering to our SOP which is drafted according to the Code of Governance set by the Charity Council.

We have received the Charity Transparency Award and Charity Governance Award from Charity Council.

We have put up the whistleblowing policy for reports on a criminal offence, a miscarriage of justice, corruption & bribery, misappropriation of funds and other serious issues.
